NEW CYLINDRICAL THRUST BLOCK (8 1/4" & 8 3/4" AXLES)

  • More lubricant reaches pinions and shaft. Helps avoid seizure from excessive wheel spinning.
  • Removed and installed through bore in side gear.

REAR AXLES - PLYMOUTH AND DODGE

  • Tread was 57.5", now 59.6" - better vehicle stability.
  • Axle shafts longer (for wider tread) and heavier (for greater durability).
  • New rear wheel bearing inner seal (all 8 1/4" and 8 3/4" axles) - all rubber, longer life, better sealing than leather.

SURE GRIP DIFFERENTIAL - VALIANT AND DART

  • Same as 8 3/4" sure grip except smaller.
  • Servicing same as 8 3/4" except case bolts are tightened to 35 ft. lbs. Assembly has no axle shaft thrust spacer (thrust controlled by ball type wheel bearings).

AXLE SHAFT END PLAY ADJUSTMENT - ALL 8 1/4" & 8 3/4" AXLES

  • Similar to previous procedure for 8 1/4" axles.
  • Identical for all 8 1/4", 8 3/4" and sure grip axles except for differences in bearing cup protrusion dimensions. (.040" on 8 1/4" - .052" on 8 3/4" - .081" on sure grip).

NEW ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE (VALIANT & DART REAR AXLES)

  • More direct method of adjusting differential bearing preload and gear backlash.
  • Pinion and bearings installed and adjusted, and differential and ring gear assembled same as previous.
  • Thin spacers, feeler gauges and chart used to select correct differential bearing spacers.
  • Spread housing, install differential. If backlash okay, finish assembling axle.

AXLE SHAFT BEARING TOOL - VALIANT & DART

  • New adapter plates for large bearing, also new collar for installing bearing.
