PRE-ELECTRONIC IGNITION NOTES

1956 - For Dual Points use CS720.

For 1957 - 1958 Dual Points use CS721.

For 1960 and later use CS720A

1961 and later: 2 styles of condensers are available, one has a wire and the other has a metal strap, both function the same and both are listed. 2 styles of caps are also listed, both are interchangeable.

Vacuum Advance Canister

If possible, take the distributor number or the old unit, they vary in arm length and rate of advance. They are usually stamped on the arm, example : 10L.

Coils for pre 1951 and /or 6v

Nothing listed by application, use the buyers guide and select a coil based on the voltage and presence or absence of any external resistor you car has in the ignition primary circuit. Any decent parts store should be able to select a " universal" coil for your needs.

For ELECTRONIC IGNITION AND LEAN BURN OWNERS:

Around 1976 the parts books get a little fragmented, sometimes resorting to the build dates of the vehicle to make the final decision regarding which of 2 or 3 parts are used. With the exception of the lean burn computer, the actual cap and rotor are no different.

SPARK PLUGS - Champion and Autolite

NOTE: Both catalogs had overlapping information on the pre wedge engines.( pre 59). It will be obvious when removing the plug if it is a short or long reach plug, as the short reach is about half the length of the long. Both are 14mm diameter. The MOST COMMON information is listed below.

Year Engine Size Champion Autolite
1954 - 1956 331-354 N12-N14 55-56
1957 - 1958 392 J12-J14 75-76
Any 383-400-413-440

"

"

Any 318-360 N12-N14 55-56

ADD "Y" TO CHAMPION FOR RESISTOR TYPES, CHANGE THE FIRST DIGIT TO AN EVEN NUMBER FOR AUTOLITE RESISTOR TYPES ( 55 &56 to 65 & 66, 75&76 to 85&86)

[ If you like a particular brand, or gap, or type, - then that's what you should use. Learning to "read" your plugs for the conditions that are going on inside your engine when you remove them will make this process a snap. Here are the general classifications in the catalogs, use your own discretion in going up or down a heat range as you see fit.]

PLUG WIRE SETS - Napa Belden

Year Engine Size Belden Part #
1954 - 1956
1957 - 1958
Any 383-400-413-440 700159 or 780014
Any 318-360 700278 or 780030

NOTES ABOUT THESE PART NUMBERS: Due to the fact that Chrysler no longer produces many of these parts and that Chrysler part numbers are quite often superseded or not in the Chrysler parts system any longer, aftermarket numbers are used. If enough current and correct Chrysler numbers are available, they can be added for what is still available from Chrysler.

I have arbitrarily chosen NAPA parts for the aftermarket, simply because of the availability of NAPA outlets and the fact that I have previously worked in their parts system. This IS NOT an expressed or implied advertisement or endorsement to use these products. MOST PARTS OUTLETS CAN INTERCHANGE THESE NUMBERS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LOCAL NAPA OR PREFER NOT TO PURCHASE FROM THEM.

IMPORTANT: ALL THESE REFERENCES HAVE BEEN ONLY SEARCHED FOR IMPERIAL OR NYB AS APPLICABLE. WHEN RESEARCHING THESE PART NUMBERS I SEARCHED FOR IMPERIAL, MODEL YEAR, ENGINE SIZE AND ANY OTHER NECESSARY DATA PERTINENT FOR THAT PARTICULAR PART.

FOR EACH GROUP OF PARTS THE SOURCE AND BRAND WILL BE LISTED< AS WELL AS ANY IMPORTANCE OF THE PART NUMBERS USED. IN THE CASE OF REBUILDABLE PARTS OR PARTS NOT EXPRESSLY NAPA- NOTES WILL INDICATE THE USE OF SUCH NUMBERS AND SOURCE.

Now when some uninterested, uncaring and uninformed counterman says " they didn't make that in that year......" or " its not listed...." you will have the upper-hand.

NOTES ON REBUILDABLE PARTS:  Many times a part is not available because the rebuilder has no "cores" from which to remanufacture a part from. It is usually possible and sometimes cheaper to send your part in - if you can be without the vehicle for the time required. Most of these parts are rebuilt by major suppliers to parts stores, regardless of the individual outlet. ( It is not uncommon for competing retail stores to be supplied by the same rebuilder) Some parts require the services of smaller specialized rebuilders, especially for vintage or very rare applications...

The following is a non inclusive list of many of the parts that can be easily rebuilt today:
Alternators, Generators, Starters, Water Pumps, Power Brake Boosters, Carburetors, Distributors, Brake Shoes, Master and Wheel Cylinders, Brake Calipers, Air Conditioning Compressors, Power Window Motors, Convertible Top Motors and Cylinders, Power Steering Pumps and Gearboxes, Wiper Motors, Motor and Trans Mounts., Fuel Pumps, Harmonic Balancers, Driveline Supports, Clutches and of course - Engines and Transmissions.

So if all else has failed, find a local or larger scale rebuilder either on your own or thru a parts store. DON'T SCRAP THE PART - if you have patience you can usually find someone to help.
