From Bill:
John Martin is the owner & does ALL chrome plating himself, no other person touches the plating operation. Most likely you'll have to leave a message as he is usually working but always calls back. He has 2 hired workers: one man polishes stainless & the other straightens bumpers, does prep work, etc.. John does a lot of hot rod, street rod & street bike chrome work as well. He just finished all exterior chrome on my 64 Galaxie 500 XL (lots of chrome) & it's awesome, $560.00, took about 5 weeks to get it which was no problem for me as I had other things going on while all trim was off the car.. My 65 LeBaron front & rear Bumpers (4 BIG pieces, I have new ends for the front) are there now, $600.00. I take my parts there & pick them up, so I'm lucky at being only an hour away. For list members north of Fresno, you might want to call Lowell Howe & use who ever he uses for chrome & stainless work as it would be closer to you.
From Don:
I have used John at Clovis Specialty Plating for some time, he has done small parts for my Hudson Hornet and my Imperial and has done bumpers for my T-Bird. Turn around time is about 3 weeks and they are always done when promised and the workman ship is excellent. He ain't cheap but you get what you pay for. Front and ear bumpers for a '57 T-Bird (rear in 2 pieces) $700.00.
From Seamus O'More:
After reading the reveiw of John at Clovis Specialty Plating I called and asked what the price would be for a set of bumbers and a grill to be chromed on my 1950 chevy sedan. John told me 200.00 each for the bumbers and he would have to look at the grill, it was going to take two weeks. Ok, I told him my name and said my son would be there with the parts. Two days later my son called and told me John wanted 250. per bumber as this was his going price for older cars and it would take 4 weeks. As for the grill he would do it for 600. that is if I took it apart for him. Now I asked my son to tell him I was upset with the price change and time change as this wasn't what he told me per the phone call.
Seems this didn't bother him as he had alot of chroming to do and his bumber machine was broken He also told my son he had a pair of older bumbers he hasn't been able to get to. Now the 50 buck change up and the two week added time isn't the issue, it is honesty in question here. Can I trust someone who seems he doesnt care a hoot about his word? Not even did he try to explain the price differance or the time problem. He has just been added to a long list of people who seem to treat others with no care. You know I am one man who just doesnt need them in my live or working on my cars. Now I will look for someone whose word is a sign of how good his work is. You know there are 5 other shops in his area. "Remember it isn't the price, it is the promise"
From Rob:
If anyone knew how much time and effort went into the preparation for parts to be chromed they would not complain about prices at Clovis Specialty Plating. This guy is fair and can't make it on minimum wage chroming your vintage bumpers.I took parts from a vintage Rockola jukebox to him and he got them finished quicker, just as nice, and less expensive than my home town plater plus he didnt lose anything in the process.Try working in a chrome shop during the summer its like hell.Bumper guys need to take their stuff to mex.You will find someone who is willing to chrome your bumpers for minimum wage.
