Here are a few free/open source tools that you can use in webmonster duties (and a lot of other things as well). The GIMP is an image manipulation tool that lets you manipulate images. It isn't as powerful as PhotoShop, but it is a good and useful program. It is available for multiple OSes, including Unix, Windows, Linux, and I believe Mac.
LeechFTP is a tool for uploading files to the website. It is has a simple graphical interface, so you don't need to know much about computers to use it.
